We’re at the end of yet another wonderful year for the digital marketing and SEO industry, and iMod Education has been hard at work during this time researching the online education spectrum and what resources are currently out there for aspiring digital professionals.  The research led to us starting work on a new project as we still don’t see courses which are as practically helpful as they are merely informative.

Ever since the launch of our Full Practical SEO Course, we have helped over 325 students to understand SEO with a course which teaches how to physically practice SEO. While this approach is great for those who need these practical skills, we realised that it would be even more beneficial to offer those starting out in the digital industry, or those simply needing a better understanding SEO, an introductory course to SEO.

You are able to sign up for pre-order at the bottom of this page!

The iMod Education Search Engine Optimisation Short Course

It is our great pleasure to say that this is our official announcement for the launch of our brand new course! Ready to go live on November 10th, 2017, the course is made for those starting out their career, those looking to broaden their skill-set or anyone interested in SEO and digital marketing.

The course consists of 6 topics, each with bite-sized lessons and short quizzes to make sure you were paying attention 😉 .

We took a new approach in writing the course content whereby we show you that online learning can be just as entertaining and fun as it is educational. Written by real SEO’s and digital marketers instead of course curators and educators. We teach you what we know, the skills we use to make a living and drive traffic, conversions and sales for clients across the world.

We share our opinions, experience and lessons learned with you in a way that will both teach you actionable skills and SEO knowledge while giving you something to chuckle about.

When we launched iMod Education, we were very confident in the subject material that we created and the fringe benefits that the course would offer people. What we didn’t know, nor anyone launching a business, is how the market would receive it. We had no idea that we’d be looking after over 300 students and in light of this, we’ve registered ourselves as a school on LinkedIn. With this feature, alumni are now able to mark themselves as having studied at iMod Education on LinkedIn:

Recent graduate Simon Page shares his thoughts on the iMod Education SEO Online Course

I have a confession to make.

Up until a few days ago, I had not attempted nor completed an online course. In fact, I have not done a single course outside of my tertiary studies, offline or otherwise (well, I did do a standup comedy course in London. More about that some other time…)

So I was relatively excited and curious to see what experience iMod Education’s SEO Course had in store for me. I was ready. Sit down. Sign up. Start.

lets-do-this_imod

This is an underused baby meme

The first lesson is an introduction to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and why it’s important to know how it works. As an “outsider” I had encountered SEO at a previous job and was taught the bare basics – although at the time I thought that I knew it all – sad! My dealings with SEO was creating meta data on webpages and articles for clients, and was a fairly basic rehashing of what had been explained to me regarding SEO practices.

But now I was to discover that I had fairly limited knowledge on the topic.

After reading through the first lesson and introductory info, I saw that there was a multiple choice quiz that had to be completed. Nice! Multiple choice only ever sucked in Science class – and SEO isn’t a science! This format continued with lesson 2, 3, 4 and 5 in which search engines – with particular focus on Google naturally- were discussed, how they function and their purpose, as well as info regarding Google Analytics and related matters.

After lesson 5 you are faced with a practical (with written answers). Wait, I’ve got to write stuff now? But it’s SEO, I thought this was technical knowhow…oh ok.

10-questions-later_imod

Now that wasn’t hard. Next!

The next couple of lessons cover the do’s and don’ts of basic SEO methods. Also covered are the content guidelines one should adhere to and how to write HTML headers and effective meta data (in which I realized I didn’t even know it all regarding the topic). This is followed by a second practical to recap the previous four lessons.

As you delve into the next few lessons things start to get technical and my non-technical mind began to spin a bit.

It was at this point that Simon knew his life would change

But now I knew how to redirect a broken webpage and how to make sure that I used the right keywords. Winning!

I must point out that during each lesson one will find a number of links and videos that can take up more time but are immensely resourceful, as well as the further recommended links. I also bookmarked a couple of pages from the course as I went along.

Over the next number of lessons you encounter some topics that you are aware of as a typical user – namely the speed of websites and using Google on mobiles – which make it quite a few lessons that are easy relatable. And then I started reading the lesson on “Local SEO”:

why-you-no-work_imod

Why is the nearest donut shop not on Google Maps?

*Rant starts*

EVERY BUSINESS NEEDS TO DO THIS PART OF THE COURSE FOR THE LOVE OF FRANK SINATRA

Simon’s anecdote follows:

I once discovered a field by trusting a local listing. Yes, a store had an address that I travelled many miles to reach, only to discover it didn’t exist and what was in front of me was very large field. I tried calling them but the phone number didn’t work. An hour of my life that I will never get back. The field didn’t even have a park with a swing.

Ok so that made me feel better. So did the lesson.

Even this image is optimized

I finished the last practical before moving onto the final two lessons, namely covering the ever changing nature of Google and how to audit a website for SEO purposes. Which left the final exam.

For the record procrastination is a terrible thing. Especially when faced with a final hurdle. But I (eventually) tackled the exam head on – and it wasn’t as half tricky as I thought it was (but challenging, nonetheless).

And with the exception of two further modules, I had completed the course. I am now an SEO graduate from the School of Hard Keywords, ready to take on the world of Google search.

So my overall thoughts on the course and summary:

The learning material was presented in manageable portions per lesson – considering there is an overwhelming amount of information for some topics covered during the course – and as a result the lessons are less intimidating. The numerous practical tasks that are required to finish lesson quizzes makes this much more dynamic than a fixed, theoretical course. Also, if you happen to own a website you can implement the lessons on your site as you progress and see the results.

i-invented-the-internet_imod

For the record Al Gore never invented the internet. He only invented Global Warming. Just kidding Al!

In summary this course will get anyone skilled and into the world of SEO and Google, with both theoretical and practical elements to assist you. An engaging and enjoyable course with benefits for your website or blog – win!

You can sign up for the course here if you’re keen.

When we launched iMod Education we knew that it would be a popular course because of the hands on approach that it offers. However, we certainly didn’t expect to have more than 200 students within 6 months. It has been quite incredible to work with the students as they progress through the course all the way to graduating and receiving their certificate. There’s a magical feeling attached to helping someone become further educated and even more of a magical feeling when we see students excel in SEO and go on to find better jobs.

With the pressure of managing 200 students we have set up a support ticket management system to further assist students with any queries they may have and we’ve kept our response time to less than 8 hours and aim to keep it in this region. Nobody wants to wait for an answer, and we don’t want anyone to wait either. Along with the support system, we are now working on our channels, the blog, Facebook, and Twitter, which will be updated on a regular basis. More importantly, we are expanding on the course material in real-time as we discover new ways that Google are doing things. We felt that these three enhancements would evolve our course, create a voice for it and allow us to provide up-to-date and relevant education to our students.

If you’re interested in registering for our course, perhaps we can encourage you to have a read of 5 reasons to do the course, written by one of our very own students.

We’d like to personally thank all our students for their commitment and for making this course a reality!

Is online learning becoming more popular? This is the burning question?  There are in fact many factors that determine its popularity….

Let us start by saying that it is predicted that by 2019 at least 50% of all classes will be delivered online! , and online learning has been slowly increasing over the past 5 years.

According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Centre, between 2012 and 2013 the number of institutions launching e-learning platforms increased by 23%.

This increase in supply clearly shows that there is an increase in demand for online learning.

If we were to look at the segmentation of learners, we would find that 34% of learners who study online are under the age of 25, that is a 9% increase from 2012! Clearly the majority of these learners are choosing to study for their degrees online as opposed to the more traditional forms of learning. In 2015 23% of students (source) stated that they would definitely/ probably not pursue a degree if their program was not available online or partially online. With the enrollment rate for students who which to study online growing by roughly 1% per year, it is clear that as we move forward a great majority of our youth will choose to study online or partially online as opposed to traditional learning.

So what is the main reason why online learning is becoming so popular amongst the youth?

23% of students ranked the affordability of the institutions fees as there number one reason for choosing an online program. With 41% of those students choosing to do a graduate or undergraduate degree in business administration. Interestingly enough the next most popular field of online study was nursing with 10.7% of students choosing to get their graduate or undergraduate degree online. According to Udemy, a popular online learning platform that has over 10 million students and 40 000 courses, 13 million people (source) are choosing to study development on there site and 8.5 million use Udemy to study Business.

Moving on further to look at the corporate training side of things.  In 2015 the global e-learning market grew by 9.2% over a 5 year period! It is now estimated that the global market is worth roughly $107 billion (source) with the compound annual growth rate of self-paced e-learning at 4.4%. In America roughly 77% of companies offer training online to help train their employees with 81% of learners (source) partaking in online study for personal development.

All in all we can be sure that online learning will continue to grow at a fast pace and become one of the leading choices for students around the world. If you are still not convinced online learning is the future of education check out our article on the benefits of studying online.

5 Reasons why you should be studying online

I am sure that by now you have heard of how beneficial it is to study online, you probably have one or two friends that are studying online and are raving about how great it is. Whilst there are lots of articles out there that explain the benefits of studying online we thought we would provide you with some idea as to why we believe you will benefit from studying online. We can’t guarantee that online learning is for you, as everyone is different and learns differently, but from our student’s feedback and our own experience, we can highly recommend it.

#1 The Ability To Learn At Your Own Pace

You probably already know this but the major benefit to studying online is the ability to learn at your own pace. Everyone learns at different speeds and whilst traditional learning doesn’t accommodate for this, online learning does. It affords you the opportunity to learn at a pace that better suits you. Say for example you don’t understand what meta data is and need more time to digest what you have learnt, with online learning you won’t be quickly rushed onto the next chapter before you have had the chance to comprehend what you have just read. You are instead given the opportunity to fully understand the concept.

#2 You Can Improve on A Niche Skill

Unlike traditional learning, online learning gives you the opportunity to focus your studies on a niche area. With online learning you aren’t forced to study a subject as a whole but rather have the opportunity to focus your time and effort on studying just the topic of interest. Whilst it is good to have a broad area of knowledge and expertise, sometimes it’s important to focus specifically on a topic that will improve your career prospects and that interests you.

why study online

#3 You Can Study Anytime From Anywhere On Any Device

Not everyone has time to go to class and spend 4 hours listening to a lecturer badger on about XYZ. For a lot of us this can get frustrating and you may find yourself missing important information. With online studying you are not forced to sit in a classroom for hours on end but can rather study for 45 minutes at a time if that is what you please. If you study at a time and place that suits you, you are more likely to absorb the information provided.  With online learning you’re not stuck in a classroom but can rather study from your home, office or even your favourite WiFi accessible coffee shop. And by not having to travel to lectures you can also save a great amount of time and money.

#4 You Are Able To Practice What You Learn Immediately

Whilst being book smart is great, it isn’t going to help you in the real world. In an interview situation, you’ll be given a practical situation that you have to solve on the fly. With online learning you are often given the opportunity to go through a chapter and immediately practice what you learn. There is no go-home and do it for homework, if you want to practice writing title tags for a website you can do it there and then, whilst you are reading the chapter. This allows you to properly make sense of what you are reading whilst the information is still fresh in your mind. Hermann Ebbinghaus created the forgetting curve which states that after an hour we have forgotten 50% of what we learnt and after 24 hours we would have forgotten 70% of what we learnt. That is why it is so important to practice what you learn as soon as you can, this reinforces the knowledge in your brain and helps you to retain that information for an extended period of time.

#5 You Are Able To Connect With Lecturers Easily & Conveniently

You would think that in traditional studying it would be easy to get hold of your lecturer and ask them a question but often this isn’t the case. We often hear stories of people who queued for over an hour to ask there lecturer a question about course material. With online learning this is not the case. If you have a question, you can ask via email, phone or even group chat and get your answer within the hour.

There are many benefits to learning online and with the huge increase in online learners over the past couple of years, it is becoming increasingly obvious that many students prefer online studying and its ease of accessibility. Did you know that the number of people studying online grows by 1% every year and that 34% of graduate students in 2015 were under the age of 25 that is 9% more than in 2012? This shows that online education is fast becoming the future of education.

Whilst it has been a while since we have updated our blog we at iMod Education are happy and proud with how far we have come and what we have achieved in the last 2 or so months. That being said we are well aware that there is still a lot of work to be done and that our journey to success is not over yet…On our way, we have learnt a lot about launching an online SEO learning platform and I am sure we will continue to learn and improve as time passes by.

Purpose is the reason we journey

Our biggest challenge has been to get noticed and stand out amongst the crowd of SEO courses already out there.  Whilst we can’t say that we haven’t made some mistakes along the way, we can say that 100% of our learners have walked away feeling like they gained valuable knowledge and insight into the world of SEO. That is a statement we are extremely proud of, as at the end of the day our mission is for our learners to love the course and feel inspired by the ideas and concepts surrounding SEO.

“I like that I understand the concept of SEO, it’s importance and that the subject isn’t so intimidating anymore.”

“I liked that the course was worded in ‘laymen’s’ terms and showed me that SEO doesn’t have to be intimidating or complicated.”

Recently we launched a competition giving 3 lucky people lifetime access to the course and we look forward to seeing how they fare and receiving their feedback and comments once they have completed the course.

We were also very excited to be mentioned in Magnetics’ blog post as one of the best short courses for creatives in South Africa!  There is no better feeling than seeing your name up there with some of the best in the industry.  If you didn’t catch it then it is definitely worth a read as there are some great courses on that list and we are proud to be up there with the best of them.

Of course, we’re thrilled to be sending certificates to our dedicated students who have passed the course:

iMod Education Certificates

We still have a long way to go though and hope to have many more learners pass the course by the end of the year.  Our journey launching this course has been challenging, exciting and fulfilling, join us and begin your life’s challenge.

Come and join us on the course!

It’s time for there to be an online Search Engine Optimisation course that’s written by search engine experts who are practising what they preach.

iMod Digital have ceased this opportunity and have created a course that consists of 21 chapters of unique, cutting edge information, practical exams and an invaluable resource pool. This course is the culmination of over a decade of practical experience and it offers students the opportunity to learn a unique skill set from experts in the field.

Christopher Mills, Director of iMod Digital said, “60% of South African’s search online before they purchase a product or hire a company. Part of the aim of this course is to bridge the gap between in-house marketing managers and the agencies they work with. The second half is to offer business owners and job seekers the opportunity to learn an invaluable skill and stay current with what the leading search engines require.”

iMod Digital, a leading company in search, is thrilled to annouce the launch of their new education branch – iMod Education. Having worked with the likes of Bidvest, The Tsogo Sun Hotel Group and The Foschini Group, iMod Digital has taken their years of experience and poured it into this jam packed course. The course takes aim at those wanting to gain insight into how to practically apply this new knowledge so that they can leverage their newly expanded skill set to improve their website, and in turn, grow their business.

“We feel there is a massive skills shortage in our country centered around the digital sphere and we wanted to create a course that helps rectify that, as well as empowers people. Even in 2016 I think there is still a stigma, or a fear of the unknown around the technology used to create and maintain websites, and how to optimise your website to attract new customers. Through our course we try and break things down into friendly, bit-sized chunks of information that you can go and practically apply to your website, be it a mom & pop type site, or even just to start to understand the lingo a bit better.”

The course is split into lots of short, rapid-fire type lessons so as not to overwhelm the learner, but rather to give them a clear and concise introduction to the content within each lesson. Each lesson includes images and videos which help you understand the subject matter as well as further reading to ensure that those that want to dig a little deeper can keep their interest peaked. At the end of every chapter, we have a few questions to check to see if you have properly understood the lesson content, with larger practical assignments included every few chapters to ensure that you can go and apply your new knowledge, and not simply have a theoretical understanding.

With the course costing only R 5 700.00, there really is no excuse for you not to be clued up about Search Engine Optimisation. With SEO experts holding your hand through the process, you will become a master of digital marketing in no time.
